Twenty real boats sail Maui's lee coast at golden hour: open-bar catamarans that load straight off Kaanapali Beach, true sailing boats out of a reopened Lahaina Harbor, a thirteen-strong fleet at Maalaea with everything from a $59.95 cocktail run to a five-course flagship. This is all of them, compared by what each evening actually gives you.
6,267 traveller reviews across the 20 boats, and every one offers free cancellation, typically up to 24 hours before departure.

Short answer
A sunset cruise on Maui costs $59.95 to $290 per person and leaves from one of three places: Kaanapali Beach, where catamarans load off the sand; Lahaina Harbor, reopened to boats since December 2025; or Maalaea Harbor on the south side, ten minutes from Kihei. Cocktail sails run $60 to $159 with drinks often included, dinner boats $140 to $290 with the meal in the fare. Boats board about half an hour before sunset, which moves from 5:44pm in late November to 7:12pm in early July. Book by your harbor first, dinner-or-drinks second.

Every Maui sunset cruise worth booking starts with these three
Three boats anchor the whole comparison, and they are genuinely different evenings rather than three versions of one. Sea Maui's open-bar catamaran off Kaanapali carries more reviews than any boat on the island. Its dinner sister runs the premium beach-loading evening. And Sail Maui's little Maalaea catamaran is the quiet contrarian pick: the best rating in the fleet at nearly the lowest price.
The most-reviewed sunset cruise on Maui, and it loads straight off Kaanapali Beach by the Whalers Village kiosk: no harbor drive, wet feet at boarding. Two hours along the West Maui coast with an open bar working the whole time.
Sea Maui's dinner version runs longer and quieter: two and a half hours off Kaanapali with a served dinner and cocktails while the sun drops behind Lanai. Boards off the sand, so bring sandals you can slip off.
The cheapest verified sunset cruise on the island, and it carries a 4.9. A real sailing catamaran out of Maalaea slip 72, two hours on the water for about half what the dinner boats charge. Bring a jacket: Maalaea blows in the afternoon.
Great excursion to do on vacation! Drinks were QUICK and the crew was awesome. Constantly refilled our alcoholic beverages and the food was surprisingly SO GOOD? Also the crew took photos of us which was so sweet <3 romantic date night with gorgeous sunset!!!
This was our best trip, the crew were superb, drinks were given throughout the food was delicious and the scenery was breathtaking. So worth the money and time. Really couldn’t recommend this trip more. No need for towels or a bag just take a camera.
Sail Maui provides an exceptional sunset experience. The crew was friendly & very accommodating. The food & drinks were a great value for money and the Maui sunset was breathtaking. This is the best 75 bucks you’ll ever spend.
The boat, crew and food was amazing. The crew were very accommodating and tentative. The prime rib was so delicious. Save room for dessert (chocolate cake or cheesecake) it’s amazing also. This was a wonderful dinner cruise.
The Crew, Captain, Guitarist and Hula Dancer and also the Buffet were All Excellent and a Friendly Atmosphere Prevailed!!! Better than going to a Luau on land by far! Would like to do this again with The Pride of Maui!

Best Maui sunset cruise by type and harbor
Two questions sort the whole fleet: do you want dinner served on deck or drinks and the sky, and which side of the island are you sleeping on. The five pages below compare every boat that fits each answer.
The honest spread is $59.95 to $290 per person, and the biggest surprise in it is that the best-rated boat sits near the bottom. What moves the price is food service first, boat size second, open bar third. These are the current from-prices on the live listings, per person, before gratuity.
What you are booking
From
What that buys
Budget cocktail runs
$59.95 to $102
The sunset with a drink in hand and no ceremony: the Malolo at $59.95, the floating tiki bar at $99, the small-group Paragon out of Lahaina at $102. The 4.9-rated Sail Maui catamaran sits here too at $71, and it is the best pure sail on the island.
Open-bar catamarans
$117 to $159
The heart of the market. 'Alihilani from Lahaina at $117, Pacific Whale Foundation's sails at $126 to $138, the Kaanapali beach-loading boats at $135 to $137, and Alii Nui's luxury Day's End sail at $159. Drinks included on most, appetizers on many.
Dinner cruises
$140 to $189
A real meal in the fare: Quicksilver's three courses at $140, Calypso's carved prime rib at $150, buffet-and-hula on Pride of Maui at $168, four plated courses at $178, and the winter dinner-plus-whale-watch at $189.
The splurges
$251 to $290
Hawaii Nautical's six-guest powerboat at $251, where the price buys near-privacy, and Alii Nui's five-course Royal dinner at $290, the luxury flagship of the island's sunset fleet.
Where Maui sunset cruises depart, harbor by harbor
Three departure points cover all twenty boats, and they are not close to each other: Kaanapali Beach to Maalaea Harbor is about forty minutes by car. Book the harbor on your side of the island first and the boat second.
Kaanapali Beach
Five boats load straight off the sand near Whalers Village: Sea Maui at the Whalers Village kiosk, Teralani at the Aqualani kiosk by the Outrigger, Gemini on the lawn between Leilani's and Ulu Kitchen. You wade in to board. Walkable from every Kaanapali resort; the garage validates with shopping but fills near sunset. The beach fleet, compared.
Lahaina Harbor
Reopened to commercial boats December 15, 2025, phasing up through 2026. Two Sail Maui catamarans run sunset sails from its slips, check-in at 116 Prison Street. Fifteen minutes from Kaanapali. Both Lahaina sails, compared.
Maalaea Harbor
The big one: thirteen boats from budget cocktail runs to the five-course flagship, beside the Maui Ocean Center on the south-central isthmus. Ten minutes from Kihei, fifteen from Wailea, free parking. Afternoons are reliably windy here; it eases toward dusk. The Maalaea fleet, compared.
Check-in opens 30 to 45 minutes before departure everywhere, and a missed boarding is a forfeited ticket on every operator here, so build in resort traffic on the Honoapiilani Highway rather than hoping.
What time the sun sets, month by month
Hawaii keeps one clock all year, no daylight saving, so sunset moves with the season alone: an hour and a half between its November floor and its July ceiling. Departures track it. The times below are US Naval Observatory figures for Lahaina on the 15th of each month in 2026.

The year's extremes fall just off the 15ths: the earliest sunset is 5:44pm in the last week of November, the latest 7:12pm in the first week of July. Boats board roughly half an hour before departure, so a January dinner cruise is a 5pm check-in and a July one closer to 6:30pm.

Maui sunset cruise FAQ
How much does a sunset cruise on Maui cost?
From $59.95 for the Malolo cocktail cruise out of Maalaea to $290 for Alii Nui's five-course Royal dinner. Cocktail sails and open-bar catamarans run $60 to $159, dinner boats $140 to $189, and the two splurges, a six-guest powerboat and the five-course flagship, sit at $251 and $290. Prices move with the date and demand, so the live listing is always the authority; every card on this site opens it.
What is the best sunset cruise on Maui?
By rating, Sail Maui's Maalaea sail: 4.9 across 97 reviews at $71. By review volume, Sea Maui's Original cocktail sail off Kaanapali Beach: 4.8 across 1,533. For dinner, Sea Maui's Premium sail leads on volume (4.8, 1,016 reviews) and Alii Nui's Royal is the luxury pick. The honest answer depends on your harbor and whether you want a meal aboard, which is exactly how the category pages split the fleet.
What actually happens on a sunset cruise?
You check in 30 to 45 minutes early, board, and spend about two hours on the water timed so golden hour, the sun dropping toward Lanai and the afterglow all happen mid-cruise. Drinks flow throughout on the open-bar boats; dinner boats serve the meal as the light changes. Crews point out landmarks and, in winter, whales. You are back at the dock about half an hour after dark with the evening still young.
Are Maui sunset cruises worth the money?
Worth it if you want the one Maui experience that combines the island's best daily event with being on the water, and 6,267 reviews averaging well above 4.5 suggest most people think so. The value play is real, though: the $71 sail delivers the same sky as the $290 dinner. Pay for the meal only if eating on deck is the occasion; otherwise take a cocktail sail and book a restaurant ashore with the difference.
What should I wear on a sunset cruise?
Resort casual, flat shoes, and one warm layer you will be glad of after the sun drops, especially out of windy Maalaea. Kaanapali beach loading means wading in to your knees: shorts or a liftable hem, footwear in hand. Nothing in this fleet enforces a dress code, and heels lose to boat decks everywhere.
Can you see whales on a sunset cruise?
December through April, very likely: these routes cross the humpback calving grounds between Maui and Lanai, with the peak January through March. Boats hold the federal 100-yard distance and whales surface where they please, often closer. June through October the whales are feeding in Alaska, and no honest boat promises otherwise; the season NOAA recognises runs November through May.
Which harbor should I book from?
The one on your side of the island. Staying in West Maui (Kaanapali, Napili, Lahaina): the beach-loading boats or Lahaina Harbor, fifteen minutes apart. Staying in South Maui (Kihei, Wailea, Makena): Maalaea Harbor, ten minutes from Kihei, where thirteen of the twenty boats sail from. Driving cross-island at sunset hour for a marginally different boat is the classic first-timer mistake.
What happens if the weather is bad or I need to cancel?
Operators sail through ordinary clouds, and cloudy evenings often produce the more dramatic sky. They cancel for genuinely unsafe conditions or, on the beach-loading boats, for high surf, in which case you are rescheduled or refunded. On your side, every listing on this site carries free cancellation, typically up to 24 to 48 hours before departure, so holding a date early costs nothing.
Helpful articles before you book
The longer answers, written out properly: which boat fits which evening, what the money buys, and how the three harbors really work.
Every boat on this site was read on its live booking page before it was listed here, and re-checked against a second independent source. Every rating and review count is the platform's own figure at the time it was read, every price is the current from-price on that listing rather than an estimate, and boats we could not verify are simply not shown.
Harbor facts come from Hawaii's Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation, whale rules from the NOAA sanctuary that manages these waters, and sunset times from the US Naval Observatory. Where two sources disagreed on a figure, the figure is not printed.
Kaanapali if you want to board barefoot off the sand, Lahaina for the real sailing catamarans, Maalaea for the biggest fleet and the budget seats. The sunset shows up for all three.
